What is public liability insurance for musicians?

Music public liability insurance is a type of cover that protects you if a member of the public is injured or property gets damaged because of your musical activities, including performing, rehearsing, recording or teaching. For musicians, it can be vital.

If your band’s performing at a public venue and someone trips over your cables and injures themselves, or your heavy sound equipment damages the stage, you could be liable. Similarly, if you’re a music teacher and a student hurts themselves in your home, or you’re rehearsing at a studio and accidentally damage the equipment, you could have a claim made against you. Public liability offers you protection.

At Lark Music, we offer cover for individuals or groups, so whether you’re an amateur performing at the weekends, a semi-professional or professional musician, DJ, producer or studio, a music teacher, band or ensemble, we can offer specialist musicians’ public liability insurance for you – helping to protect you against the unexpected, and giving you the peace of mind to keep making music happen.

What does public liability insurance cover?

Public liability insurance for musicians covers you against the cost of certain claims made against you as a result of your musical activities, including performing, rehearsing or teaching. It covers:

Claims costs resulting from any accidental injury to a member of the public
Damage to third-party property or equipment, such as at a venue or recording studio
Any legal fees and defence costs if someone claims against you

At Lark Music, our music public liability insurance also includes access to a 24/7 legal helpline free of charge – giving you the peace of mind we’re on hand to help if the unexpected happens.

How much Public Liability Insurance do musicians need?

As a gigging musician, you know that venues and events can vary significantly, from intimate café gigs to large-scale public festivals – and each have different levels of risk. How much public liability insurance cover you need will depend on where, and how often, you perform. We offer a range of different levels of public liability insurance for musicians, so you can always choose the cover that best matches your needs.

Do I need £1million, £2million or £5 million public liability insurance?

You may want to consider £1 million, £2 million or £5 million public liability insurance for performances and occasions considered lower risk, such as casual local gigs, small venues, private events, and teaching.

Do I need £10 million public liability insurance?

When you’re performing to a large audience, or in a higher-risk venue, you may want to consider the highest level of cover. We provide £10 million public liability insurance for events such as festivals and corporate gigs, as well as large venues and historical buildings at higher risk of damage.

How much does public liability insurance cost?

How much your public liability insurance will cost depends on a range of factors. These include the level of cover you need, whether you’re a professional or amateur musician, how often you perform, how often and where you teach, and the value of your musical equipment.

We understand that many musicians may face financial pressure. That’s why, with Lark Music, you only pay for the amount of cover you need – starting from less than £11 a year.

Our insurance covers gigging musicians, bands, DJs, music teachers, session musicians, touring performers, music producers and more. Whether you’re a full-time professional musician, semi-professional, or amateur, we’ll keep you covered so you can play on, protected.

Personal accident insurance for musicians

Personal protection for solo musicians, bands and ensembles – from under £9 a year

While musicians’ public liability insurance helps protect you from the cost of a claim if a member of the public is hurt, it doesn’t offer protection if you have an accident yourself. If your livelihood depends on your ability to perform, you may want to consider personal accident cover to keep you protected if you’re unable to play due to an accidental injury.

Accidents can happen to the best of us. From injuring a hand on tour, hurting yourself while loading or unloading heavy equipment, or having an accident on route to a gig, if you can’t play, you won’t get paid. Personal accident insurance for self-employed musicians offers a safety net – providing financial support if injury stops you working.

At Lark Music, our Musicians Personal Accident cover provides lump-sum payments up to £30,000 in the case of death or permanent disablement, or weekly payments up to £375 per week* for any temporary total disablement where you are unable to undertake your normal paid musical activities following an accident.

We offer personal accident cover alongside musicians’ public liability insurance for individual musicians, or all members of a band or ensemble, from just £9 a year.

*Weekly benefits are based upon your musical activity earnings, it is payable up to a maximum of 52 weeks. Payments would start after a 2 week excess period. Proof of earnings is required in the event of a claim. The maximum benefit payable will be based on the cover level chosen.

Public liability insurance for musicians – FAQs

Do musicians need public liability insurance?

While public liability insurance isn’t always a legal requirement for musicians, it offers invaluable protection if a member of the public is injured or property is damaged as a result of your performance or setup. From a speaker falling and damaging the venue, to a member of the public tripping over your cables, accidents can come at a high cost to you. Music public liability insurance protects you from the costs of claims made against you, helping protect both your livelihood and your reputation.

Is public liability insurance required for gigs?

Many venues, event organisers and promoters  require you to have musicians’ public liability insurance to allow you to perform, especially for large-scale or expensive events such as festivals and weddings. While it’s not a legal requirement, it’s important to check with your venue operator to make sure you have the right cover to meet any contractual obligations and to secure bookings. Even if a venue does not ask you to get public liability cover, it’s a good idea to protect yourself anyway, just in case.

How much public liability insurance do musicians need?

The level of cover you need depends on the type of gigs you play, if and where you teach, and the venues you work with. Smaller venues may accept £1 million in coverage, while larger events and corporate clients often require £2 million to £5 million or even £10 million. If you’re unsure about the level of cover for your needs, just give us a call on +44 (0)3331 886 582 and we can provide quotations for each cover option available.

What is the difference between public liability and personal accident insurance?

Musicians’ public liability insurance covers you against the claims made by third parties for injury or property damage caused by your musical activities, whereas musicians’ personal accident insurance is designed to protect self-employed musicians personally – providing vital financial support if you’re injured and unable to play.

Does public liability insurance cover my equipment?

No, public liability insurance does not cover your musical equipment, or any equipment that you may not own but is in your care. Public liability cover is specifically designed to protect against injury or damage to third parties. To cover your instruments and music gear, you need a musical instrument or equipment policy, which we can provide. You can choose to combine both types of cover for complete protection when you get a quote online.
